LED lighting

Post  Mark Coveny on 17/4/2009, 3:02 am

I've been doing a lot of research on conserving energy. Lighting is the topic for this post. I personally have been staying away from CFL lighting thus far because it's not made in the USA, it contains mercury, and doesn't react well to being turned on and off repeatedly. My research led me to Light Emiting Diodes from Light Bulb Challenge . Doing a bit more research I found Lamping Comparision Chart a much better reference. The pricing I found for LED lights sucks. Although Don's Green Store had some pretty good prices. I wanted to try some out without having to make a big deal about it. I liked the idea of LED's alot more than CFLs. When I found Sam's Club 3.5w LED light for $12 I decided to try them out. Jennifer loves them, she says the light much better than normal light bulbs. The brightness is an issue though. You can see a big difference between the lumen. We've changed out 13 lights now (2 X 7w and 11 X 3.5w) for a total savings of (85 X 5 = 425, 60 X 9 = 540 and 945 - 52.5) 892w per hour when they are all in use. The 85 watt lights were staying on more so there is more of an actual savings there than the other lights. The house isn't as bright, but the long term savings will be nice, along with how much I'm helping the planet. Very Happy
