About Trams and Rails
The Trams and The Rail in the book are actually what we call Maglev (magnetic levitation) trains. The idea has been around since 1902 but they have only been commercial since 1984. The book is based off the permanent magnet EDS(Electrodynamic suspension) system where there are no magnets attached to the train.. There are wheels set in the ground at each of the stopping/loading points. In my book there is a fast Maglev and a slow Maglev. The slower version is called the rail, and the faster is called the Tram. The top speed for the Tram is 350mph or 560kmh. The rail runs much slower at 150mph or 241kmh. Both use very little electricity to function, and have compatible noise levels to a regular train. All of the tracks are straight and level. They connect across the globe. On the tram it would take you roughly eight hours to travel from Washington, DC to Sacramento, CA. (2700 miles) The fee for the trip would around the cost of two people going out to a nice dinner.
